our Work:
Healthcare

The Dalton Foundation is working is over 10 countries, serving and supporting over 300 healthcare facilities. Our approach to supporting and strengthening healthcare delivery has two components. In Haiti, we have the greatest experience and extensive work due to long-term working relationships with healthcare facilities and government leaders. Our projects in Haiti focus on data mapping, education & training, and strategic nationwide programs. In other countries, we’ve taken what we’ve learned from medical equipment modernization and standardization in Haiti and applied it to our work in other countries. We continue to  work with key partners to provide life-saving medical equipment and training to mission hospitals around the world.

“‘But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,’ declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 30:17

The Dalton Foundation continues to work with key partners in Haiti, Togo, Nigeria, Malawi, Zimbabwe, India, Romania, Guatemala, The United States, Ukraine, Barbados and Fiji.

Our extensive  partnership

Working in Haiti

Our most extensive work has been in the country of Haiti where we have been working for over 8 years to truly understand the healthcare landscape of the country and strategize on the best ways to improve access to healthcare and improve the quality of care for the people of Haiti. We are a founding partner and supporter of The Haiti Health Network which is a collaboration of over 700 members representing over 200 organizations throughout Haiti.

For the past several years our team has collected demographic, service, and capacity data for thousands of healthcare facilities throughout Haiti in partnership with The Ministry of Health. This data is displayed in the reLink Global Health data base in English, French, and Haitian Creole and can be accessed free of charge.  This useful database quickly displays the locations of key services and life-saving medical equipment throughout Haiti.  Key facility capacity data is also available through the Haiti Healthcare Capacity Report published in partnership with The Haiti Health Network.

Through The Haiti Health Network we have organized and hosted dozens of in person and online collaborative events to bring healthcare providers, administrators, and funders together for sharing of best practices, clinical training, and encouragement. Every month we host 5 or more meetings with the Haitian healthcare community and host several clinical training webinars for Haitian healthcare professionals with our partners. It is our passion to support these healthcare heroes and promote sustainability of healthcare in Haiti.

Armed with knowledge obtained from the data collected and these numerous relationships and partnerships we have organized and led several nation-wide strategic health systems strengthening projects.

Current Projects

Equipping the Caregivers

Throughout the data collection process, we learned the shocking reality that only 14.79% of rural healthcare facilities had the basic diagnostic equipment they needed to care for patients close to home.  As a result, we launched the Equipping the Caregivers project in 2020 to provide they vital tools for physicians and nurses. The goal of this program is to ensure the healthcare professionals have the tools necessary for quality patient care and the ability to treat commonly encountered conditions like hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and respiratory infections in local villages.

Metrics and indicators have been put in place and are collected quarterly to measure the impact on numbers of patients that can be seen, diagnosed, appropriately referred, and treated in a timely manner.  Based on early successes in Northern Haiti, we have recruited strategic equipment partners to expand this program to other regions in Haiti. To date, we have distributed over 900 kits in four of the ten departments in Haiti and will be expanding reach all departments.

All equipment selected for this program was either directly purchased in Haiti and/ or selected because it can be sustained with disposables from Haiti.

Kits Include:

  • Otoscope /Ophthalmoscope
  • Pulse oximeter
  • Sphygmomanometer for adults and children
  • Stethoscope
  • Thermometer
  • Nebulizer with tubing and albuterol
  • Reflex hammer
  • Blood glucose monitor with strips and lancets
  • relinkglobalhealth.org Healthcare Facility Reference Directory
  • Haitian Creole Bibles

Current Project

Medical Equipment standardization

Using a country-wide approach we have implemented a medical equipment standardization and services strategy model that has several key components:

  • Develop overall strategy and prioritize modalities for standardization. Focus: ER, safe surgery, 02 therapy, and NICU care
  • Determine appropriate makes / models for regional standardization
  • Identify affordable, reliable sources for equipment sourcing
  • Identify shipping and importation partners
  • Develop plan for installation, preventative maintenance, and clinical & technical training
  • Develop training plan for ongoing biomedical support at each facility
  • Support launch of haitian led biomedical services co and cadre of US biomeds to assist
  • Disaster Preparedness- Strategic placement of key orthopedic surgical equipment
